Our Mission

Biodiversity, the variety of life on Earth, is under threat. Despite discovering around 18,000 species annually, we’ve only catalogued 20% of all biodiversity, leaving many species unknown and at risk. Tragically, many of the species we have catalogued are now lost (in limbo between extant and extinct), with little known about them. Others go extinct before we can even study them. Our mission is to conduct biodiversity research targeting lost, rare, and understudied species.

We are committed to preserving biodiversity. Working with fellow scientists, local experts, and engaged citizens, we strive to protect and conserve species and ecosystems.

Our focus is on three groups:

  • Lost species: those not reliably observed in a decade or more
  • Understudied species: those whose biology, ecology, or distribution we know too little about
  • Endangered species: those threatened with extinction
